They called themselves "the Smartest Guys in the Room" but they perpetrated the biggest corporate fraud in US history. This is the New Zealand premiere of the smash-hit West End play from 2010.
The story follows the rise and fall of the Texas energy giant ENRON from the bull market excesses of the Clinton years to its eventual collapse early this century.
Primarily a straight play, it also uses song and dance numbers and clever stage trickery to transform what might seem rather dry content into a hugely riveting and entertaining night of theatre.
We are looking for a cast of about 15 actors of both genders and covering a wide range of ages to play 35 characters. Most roles will be doubled and even trebled. A majority of the characters come from the corporate world and include traders, lawyers, accountants, bankers.
Listed below are some of the main roles in the play. (Indicative ages are given for the four ENRON executive roles only.) ENRON EXECUTIVES
Jeffrey Skilling CEO; very intelligent and charismatic, 30s - 40s
Claudia Roe President; smart, sexy and ambitious, 30s – 40s
Ken Lay Chairman; charming and likeable, 50s – 60s
Andy Fastow CFO; nervy, needy and very bright, 20s – 30s
Sheryl Sloman and the Analysts A female three-piece satirical singing group
Gayle A glamorous news reader and reporter
Daughter Jeff Skilling's 6 year old daughter (to be played by an actor)
Irene Gant Disgruntled ENRON employee who loses everything
Texas Congresswoman Politician (enough said)
Clem and Lou Market Traders; alpha-males, competitive, aggressive (there are six other trader roles)
Otis A security officer; another employee who loses everything
Arnold Schwarzenegger The Governator
EITHER GENDER ROLES
Raptors (x3) Shadowy characters, part-raptor, part human. Move like Jurassic Park raptors
Lehman Brothers (x2) Bankers (comic roles)
Hewitt and Ramsay Corporate lawyers
Big and Little Arthur Andersen Accountants (Little Arthur is wise-cracking and satirical)
(Singers) There may be opportunities for other actors to sing
