The Saint Mary's church choir is the most liked and well-known choir in Palmerston North. The heart and soul of the community, the ladies in the choir provide the congregation with life, joy and music, until the new parish priest decides he wants a choir to impress the bishop - and these ladies aren't it! So the women go it alone and become Ladies for Hire - choir hire, that is. Characters:
HARRIET - late 50s, single. The choir mistress (must be able to play the piano).
MARY McINTYRE - 50s, married to George. Heavy drinker and devout Catholic.
MARY O'DONNELL - 40s, married. Manages office for her husband's wrecker's business. Savvy. Dresses sexily.
MARIJKA VAN DIEMEN - 40s, Dutch immigrant. Married with 7 children. Worn out with running family and working.
SHELLEY - 18, unmarried. Trainee hairdresser, new to Palmerston North and lonely.
FATHER PAUL - new priest. Austere and ambitious.
FATHER PETER - 60s, parish priest at St Mary's for 30 years. Kind.
TRENT - 16, troubled eldest son of Marijka.
KINDERGARTEN TEACHER - mid 30s, very PC (may be played by another cast member).
